A New Era for Power in Bayelsa
A New Era for Power in Bayelsa: Inside the BYERA Stakeholder Town Hall
Bayelsa State is entering a new era in electricity regulation, distribution, and consumer protection and this stakeholder town hall captures the moment that transformation begins.
Hosted by the Bayelsa Electricity Regulatory Agency (BYERA) in Yenagoa, the meeting brought together regulators, electricity providers, policymakers, business leaders, community representatives, and consumers to discuss the future of the state's emerging electricity market and what it means for residents and businesses alike.
As Bayelsa takes on greater responsibility for regulating its own power sector under the Electricity Act 2023, the session provided a clear and practical explanation of the opportunities, challenges, and responsibilities that come with a decentralized electricity framework.
Discussions focused on critical consumer issues, including access to accurate metering, transparent billing practices, protection against unlawful disconnection, and the rights of electricity users under the new regulatory regime. Participants also examined the obligations of service providers and the role of regulation in ensuring accountability, reliability, and improved service delivery.
Speakers highlighted the far-reaching impact of unreliable electricity on economic growth, healthcare delivery, education, security, and household livelihoods. They also outlined BYERA's strategy for managing the transition from the existing system to a state-regulated electricity market while maintaining continuity of service and minimizing disruption for consumers.
The town hall addressed key sector challenges such as tariff design, metering deficits, electricity theft, infrastructure constraints, and legacy debts. Practical solutions were presented, including phased meter deployment, strengthened consumer protection measures, enhanced stakeholder engagement, and a regulatory framework designed to encourage investment and improve sector performance.
More than a policy discussion, this meeting marked the beginning of a fundamental shift in how electricity is governed, regulated, and delivered across Bayelsa State.
